Helmet compulsory for police and traffic personnel

INDORE: This is one measure that's sure to impress Indoreans when it comes to road safety, encouraging them to wear helmet. Starting next week, traffic police will penalize police and traffic personnel if they do not wear helmet. Eventually, it will be made compulsory for people in the district.
Official figures show that 62 motorists died so far this year due to not wearing helmet, while in 1,109 accidents, victims did not wear helmet.
Traffic police ASP Anjana Tiwari, however, said they are yet to receive an official order from IG office. She said, "Wearing helmet has been made compulsory for police and traffic personnel. For effective enforcement of rules, it is important that police should follow it and be the first one to set an example."
Tiwari said each month four to five people die in city due to ignoring safety measure like not wearing helmet.
This is not the first time that wearing helmet has been made compulsory. In 2011, a stern drive was carried out against those not wearing helmet. It, however, failed as people unanimously protested against police's move.
Sources said this year 110 people died in each quarter on an average. Data show that 100 people died between January and March this year while another 140 died in accidents between August 2013 and November 2013.
The data provided by transport expert and director of NGO Save Life Cycle Atul Mende is much staggering. He said, "So far, this year 718 people died in Indore district in accident of which nearly 75% were two-wheelers. Last year, it was 713. Police alone cannot be held responsible. Along with awareness, traffic education is very important and traffic police should take care of this."
A team of students from the Indian Institute of Management, Indore, is also conducting a study to know why Indoreans avoid wearing helmet. The team is being led by DSP Vikram Singh Raghuvanshi.
